PhD Program Requirements
Prospective students interested in our program will apply through the School of Graduate Studies. Detailed information regarding University requirements and application submission information can be found here.
All application materials must be received by January 15th to ensure consideration for the program.
*Note: MD/PhD dual-degree program applicants are not subject to the January 15th deadline but are strongly encouraged to apply early.

- Statement of Purpose – a strongly written essay, highlighting your academic experience and any relevant experience/application to your current interest (internships, jobs, research, etc.). Students with clearly defined research interests that match those of a faculty member and career goals are significantly more likely to be accepted and to receive support. If your desire is to work with a specific faculty member, please state this clearly in your essay. Guidelines for writing your statement can be found by clicking this link. - Official Transcripts– documentation of all undergraduate and graduate level coursework taken. Only official transcripts will be accepted. Per University policy, we cannot accept copies. All official transcripts must be sent directly to the School of Graduate Studies and not the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences.

- Three Letters of Recommendation – academic and professional recommendations are recommended

The TOEFL test is a requirement of all non-native English language speakers. A valid TOEFL score must be submitted upon application to the program; otherwise, we will not be able to consider you application. The TOEFL will be waived for international students who received a previous degree from an accredited U.S. institution or from an institution where English was the primary language of instruction. Waivers may also be granted in special circumstances pending student petition and approval by the Dean of Graduate Studies.
The minimum TOEFL score required for consideration for admission:
- Paper-based 577
- Computer-based (IELTS) 7.0
- Internet-based (iBT) 90
Applications received whose TOEFL score does not meet the minimum requirement will not be considered for admission.
In addition, international applicants are required to submit an Affidavit of Support (ex. bank statement) to ensure he/she has sufficient funds to support his/her studies at the University.
